Made in the USA!

A few years ago, when we first created the Made in the USA category , it was a relatively small endeavor. Manufacturers were mostly making their products out of the country, while parents and retailers like us were just beginning to look for products not only based on price and quality, but also where they were made

Travel Fever

Spring is a great time to get the kids out of the house, start taking trips and plan outings for the whole family. However, Travel + Kids introduces all sorts of new parenting challenges; perhaps you discover that your once angelic toddler turns into a “bolter” when you go to the grocery store, or that your sleek and stylish tote can no longer hold the steamer trunk of supplies necessary for a day at the zoo. As a parent, it can sometimes feel like life is a constant adjustment, a constant search for solutions to new problems that you never knew you had

Twelve Months of Sewing Club Featured E-Patterns For May 2010

I have to confess that for the first since I started my Twelve Months of Sewing Club back in May 2006 I’ve been remiss in not updating the club for the months of February, March, and April 2010. Sometimes life gets in the way of ones internet and blogging fun and when push comes to shove – well, life wins out. So, please forgive me.

The Oompa Minute v78: Celebrating Earth Day with Eco Kids

We’ve mentioned before how excited we get about good-quality art supplies. But when they’re eco-friendly, come in gorgeous packaging and it just so happens to also be Earth Day—well, it just seems right. Eco Kids was founded by a former nanny, who saw the need for more natural and safe art supplies when she came to have her own children.

FSC: Why it Matters

Recently, we began carrying the Q Collection Junior , a line of children’s furniture that is all made right here in the United States. Here at Oompa, we’re always excited when we can find toys , gear or furniture that is made in the United States , and even more excited when it is locally sourced (a vague term, but it usually means that the materials come from within 100 miles of the production facility).

No new ears

So I work from home and maybe it does look like I’m just lounging about in bed all day, staring in to space and doing nowt. I’ll have you know that the life of a small bear is full of trauma and angst. I have to protect the pyjamas from pyjama thieves and something horrible could happen to those pillows if I wasn’t here to keep them in their place.

Sesame Street still going strong, going green!

It’s hard to believe that Sesame Street turned 40 this past year, but it’s true. For forty years, kids across the country have been learning how to count, spell, and remember what they were supposed to buy at the grocery store. (A loaf of bread, a container of milk, and a stick of butter

It’s a very Care Bears time of the year

She’s come a berry long way, baby!

If you’re as old as I am (very, very old—just ask my kids), then you, too, remember when Strawberry Shortcake first arrived on the scene in the early 1980s. By that time I was really too old to play with dolls (see, I told you I was old), but that didn’t stop me from becoming totally enamored of the little scented dolls some of the little girls I babysat for had. What wasn’t to like

Organic Cleaners for Hands, Toys & Nursery

During the past few years people have asked for organic cleaning solutions for babies.  I never seriously considered adding cleaners to Oompa – we’re a baby toy , gear and furniture store after all.  I narrowly concluded that most people could simply order organic cleaning supplies online, drop by their local Whole Foods or Trader Joe. My thinking was set straight after seeing the steadily increasing number of requests from our online and retail customers.  We did some research, tested several products and found wonderful, natural cleaning solutions we’re happy to stand behind.  We welcome Fields Organics to Oompa and hope you enjoy these natural cleaners as much as we do

The Cutest Toddler Backpacks EVER

I was in Japan a few weeks ago, chuckling at their charmingly rampant use of cute icons for everything.  Ramen packing?  Check!  Subway informational poster?  Check!  Taxi Cab literature?  Check!  All had Sanrio-esque icons to make even the most boring, staid message cute and 2D huggable. While Skip Hop is not based in Japan, and I’m pretty sure they don’t have any designers who hail from Tokyo, they have managed to unleash The.Cutest.Backpacks.EVER.  Thank you Skip Hop for channeling every Sanrio-loving girls inner designer into backpack form. Zoo Pack, Dog from Skip Hop , $19.99 Zoo Pack, Penguin from Skip Hop , $19.99 Arigato, Skip Hop! – Milanie Share This
