Holiday season fanfare has already begun, and I am reminded of my holiday motto: No more junk toys! Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and/or the Winter Solstice, if you have children, you know what junk toys are. Junk toys are toys that will have little educational value, are usually made of plastic, are overly commercial, and end up in our landfills. Green parents often try to make these toys disappear, but it is better to prevent their buying and giving in the first place.

A new website is offering consumers an easy way to get rid of unwanted catalogues. With the holiday season approaching, my mailbox has become inundated with catalogues for every product under the sun. Previously, I have sent individual letters to each company, as well as signed up for services that were supposed to stop the catalogues from coming; however, the effects of all these efforts has worn off, and new ones are arriving daily.

Melissa and Doug See and Spell is a wooden puzzle in which children select letters that fit into recessed spots to spell the word that matches the picture on each wooden “card”. When evaluating my preschool learning environment, one thing that was required but missing were puzzles that spell words. Melissa and Doug See and Spell filled this void in my preK environment

Any toy that can encourage a child to help with household chores is a good toy in my opinion. Add quality wooden construction, and I am sold! Magic Cabin offers a Child’s Cleaning Set that contains real cleaning tools. The set includes a metal dustpan and broom, string mop, and a broom; all child-sized! Hot Toys has announced the latest collectible from their Marvel series – a vampire hunter who is half-man and half-vampire that becomes the protector of humans against the vampires – the 1/6th scale Blade collectible figure. Dressed in the Daywalker’s movie-accurate costume of an overcoat, black jacket, vest, shirt, pants and boots, the figure is an authentic likeness of Wesley Snipes from Blade II . Look for the figure to be released Q1 of 2010 .

Bryan from Paper Foldables is back to wrap up his series of downloadable paper figures from the old school video game Kid Niki . Here is the final boss of my Kid Niki series, “Stone Wizard”! This is the guy who kidnapped Kid Niki's girlfriend causing the radical ninja to fight through all of the previous levels and bosses to try and save her. At level 07, Stone Wizard stands atop a set of stairs spitting fireballs at you.
